Backyard farming is the act of creating a garden for plants, raising of animals for pets and personal consumption. As the name implies, it is created at one side of the house mostly at the backyard.
Features of Backyard Farming :
1. Pen House ( for chicks, turkey and geese )
2. Fish Tank ( for catfish, tilapia )
3. Vegetables garden ( spinach, pepper, tomato, pepper, e.t.c.).
*PEN HOUSE :
It is built to rear few birds all year round or during festive periods. Animals raised here is strictly for family consumption and gifts to friends and relatives. The number of birds raised ranges from 5-10, 10-20 pieces depending on family size and aim.
Birds are bought from chick hawkers at 4-6 weeks old and raised organically with compounded feeds and household remnants.
* FISH TANK :
Few quantities of fish are raised in two 1000litre tanks. Why do you need two tanks? Catfish are naturally cannibalistic, they feed hierarchically which resulted in irregular growth among the fishes. The bigger fish eats the smaller ones, and before you know; the stocks are greatly reduced in number. The smaller fish are bullied by the bigger fish; hence, refused to eat and this results to runt fish.
To avoid any of these, there must be constant sorting and removal of smaller fish to the other tank. Catfish and tilapia accepts pelletized feeds and household remnants, they grow faster with good water management.
* VEGETABLES GARDEN :
A small portion of the land is cultivated, hays are made with hows and dried seeds are spread on it. Some seeds required mulching after spreading the seeds. The hays are enriched with poultry droppings and seedlings are watered with fish water in watering cans. Removal of weeds is done regularly with hands.
